Pens I use

I get asked a lot, on Instagram and Youtube, about what pens I use for my doodles, so I thought I’d list them all down here. All pens that are mentioned in this post are great pens and I am very happy to share them with you who, I’m guessing, are about to venture into the world of doodling or drawing. Good for you. It’s a very good place. ;) You will not be disappointed when you see a simple line or a dot turn into a beautiful creation. :)

If you are interested in any of the pens mentioned or posted, simply click on the images and they will take you to where I purchased them. They will all be linked to amazon because that is where I mostly shop for my art supplies. :)

First up is a pen by papermate called Liquid Flair. It’s a great pen, the black color is perfect, true noir, writes very well and lines come out straighter than the regular ballpoint pens. I love these pens and I have been using them a lot for my doodles. I’ve used up a box of 12 already. :) Yep. LOL. There are two cons with these pens, 1.) the ink bleed through thin papers such as 60lb ones, but if you use them on thicker and heavier materials, they will not bleed trhough. 2.) the ink have a hard time setting on thick papers. It will smudge, so be careful.

Second, I love the Artline Drawing Pen System. They’re really hard to get. I googled these pens a couple of days ago and I believe that they are originally from Australia. I wish they would sell these in bulks on Amazon. These are like the staedtler pigment liners. I love how they never seem to run out of ink. I think if I don’t destroy the felt-tip I can fill up an entire sketchbook with just maybe a couple of these pens. They come in different tip sizes. My favorite is the 0.4mm. Not too thin or too thick. They are perfect :)

Third, if you want to invest on pens for whatever reason, writing, drawing, journaling, etc, I suggest buying Copic Multiliner SP’s. I own these pens and I love them. They come in different tip sizes and each pen is refillable in ink. The tips/nibs are also replaceable. You can get the refills and nibs at blick art materials. Yep, another online store where I get my art supplies, but I don’t use it as much as I use Amazon, because shipping is very slow. :P. Anyways, I wish these pens were made of plastic. I don’t like the feel of them. It feels like I am holding a light screw driver with them. With that being said, I still love how they write. If you’re a pro, or if you plan on doodling forever, these pens are a must. The ink tend to dry fast on me though, but I keep thinking that maybe I just got a bad set of nibs. Whatever. :P I still love them :)

Fourth, the staedtler pigment liners. I love, love, love, (3 loves! :D) these pens. They write smooth, don’t bleed or smudge on any paper, thick or thin, they are amazing!!! I just wish these pens were affordable. I think each pen cost $3.50 each. Expensive right? Yep. They’re that good. :D You can get a set of 6 in different tip sizes. I have nothing bad to say about these pens. They are perfect in every way! :)

Last but not least, another copic marker pen set. :) They are almost the same as the copic multiliner SP, but they are not refillable. Also another pen that never seem to run out of ink :) I love these. They write just as good as the pens mentioned in this post.

I am glad I discovered these pens through endless google searching. If you want to recommend a pen, let me know in the comments. I will try them out! As an artist, I can never have enough pens! :D

These are all part of my doodling arsenal and I LOVE each one. BTW, I’m ThisIsHowWeLearnToBeBrave over on Instagram… Hope I helped. :)

    1. Hi Kaitlin. I wont recommend markers for my book because the pages are thin. Gel Pens are great for my book. For other drawings, love bic markers, copic, crayola markers. I use all kinds of markers, from cheap to expensive ones. :)

  3. Hello Kaitlin, I just enjoyed watching your July 30, 2015 “slow doodling-flowers,” and I would like to know, which pen did you use? Your work is lovely.

  4. Thanks, Krisa! I will go and pick up one, for it looks like the ink comes out so smoothly. Thanks for answering so promptly…, on a Sunday. Watching you create has made me want to get back into doodling and working with tangles. You have inspired me. I look forward to watching all the videos, you have posted, along with future ones. Do you recommend a very fine point pen to use over acrylic paint. I have found, I have problems with my Micron pens. Thank you again.

  8. Hi KC, I am a great fan of your work, living in Germany. In some videos on your YouTube channel you are using a round “ruler”, with a blue random. Unfortunately, I can’t describe it more detailed.
Do you know, which equipment I mean and can you tell me it’s name or the company? I tried to find it here in Germany, but without any luck!
I really would appreciate, if you will help me in this matter.
    Thank you so much!
